“Oreos or Zebra Cakes?” Malachi dropped his green gaze down on the small kitten popping out of the safety of his jacket; the tiny calico blinked up at him with an equally green gaze, and he pursed his lips as he read the look shining in his companion's eyes. “I'm hungry and short on cash. I can buy three of these things whereas if I would only have enough money to buy one thing of apples.” The druid frowned softly and sighed, his stomach mirroring the burn in his pocket; he had bills to pay, or else he'd have nowhere to live, but in return he had little money left for food and he was already on the verge of scrounging around in the couch cushions. All he had left was twenty dollars, and eating became a once a day type of deal. Cake treats and candy, he found, were inexpensive meals; but Fluff disapproved.
'You're going to get sick off of all the sugar.' She mewed mentally to him, and he replied with a flash of a smile and not going for just the Oreos, but the Zebra Cakes as well. If he was going to get sick, then he might as well enjoy himself while he was at it. Turning from the rack of snacks, Malachi took in a small breath and smiled as if his mission had been accomplished. Ten feet away from the check-out counter a bell sounded as someone walked in and Malachi glanced toward the door just in time to watch a hooded person walk to the counter. His eyes fell from the hoodie-clad torso and landed on a gun held tightly in the hand of the new comer. Malachi's heart stopped for a mere second, eyes going wide, and the next minute stretched out into what seemed like eternity.
Malachi dropped his snacks and stepped toward the counter just as the person raised his gun, aiming straight at the clerk. “Hey!” The second the word left his mouth, Malachi took in a sharp breath as the person turned on him, gun and all. Malachi felt the pain explode in his chest before he heard the gun shot, before he knew what was happening. Warmth spilled downward from his chest, soaking into his shirt; each breath was more painful than the last, and as he fell down onto his knees his head began swimming in and out of a blackness that felt like a thick, heavy fog in his brain. His breathing fell into short, raspy gasps but he hardly noticed as the blackness came on and took him once more, though this time completely taking him.
